Cycling Without Age
Cycling Without Age is a wonderful initiative that trains volunteer cycle “Pilots” to take older people out for bike rides on purpose built Danish Trikes reducing isolation and generating connection through sharing stories. Rides promote intergenerational & cultural learning between passengers and pilots.
Ellenor Gray, Community Services Manager at the YOU Trust who runs the service in partnership with GP Practices in Portsmouth & South East Hampshire says:
We had two existing Trikes in Portsmouth, and with the support of Lightning Safety Systems we have been able to purchase a third Trike – which enables us to be able to launch the service in a whole new area on Hayling Island.
We know through our work with older people and Carers that getting out and about can be more challenging and the Cycling Without Age trikes are perfect for feeling the wind in your hair. The rides have a huge impact on both passengers and pilots.
We are so grateful to the Team at Lightning Safety Systems for their support over the last year with direct funding of the CWA Trike, organisational support with our Office Safety Systems, and of course their staff volunteering as Pilots!
The Elizabeth Foundation
For 40 years, The Elizabeth Foundation, (TEF), has been teaching deaf babies and preschool children to learn to listen and talk. Through a wide range of outstanding education and welfare services, they improve learning outcomes and social inclusion, setting high expectations for bright futures. The charity provides the practical support and guidance to families from the moment their child is diagnosed with any degree of hearing loss – often when a baby is a just a few weeks old. Families can attend specialist education sessions at the Family Centre in Portsmouth, or enrol for online learning. By providing early intervention to deaf and hearing impaired children, including those with additional disabilities and learning needs, TEF aims for children to leave them at age 5, ready and able to join school with confidence, alongside their hearing peers. The charity has no automatic entitlement to statutory funding therefore securing the majority of their income by fundraising from voluntary sources including grants, corporate sponsorship, individual donations and legacies. Through its 40-year history the charity has remained dedicated to delivering comprehensive educational and support services that make a positive, and evidence- based difference to deaf children and their parents.
