One of the newest members of the team, Phil Stocks, brings more than twenty years of sales and client relationship experience to the role of Business Development Manager. His approach reflects the same principles that define Lightning Safety Systems, which include trust, professionalism and genuine care for the organisations they support.

A natural fit with an employee-owned business

Before joining Lightning Safety Systems, Phil spent six years with a respected family-run security company known for its personal approach and professional standards. During that time, he built a strong client portfolio and developed long-standing relationships based on reliability, understanding and consistent delivery.

When the company was acquired by a larger conglomerate, that personalised service inevitably changed.

Joining Lightning Safety Systems felt like a return to the kind of business environment Phil values most.

In his conversations with customers so far, the subject of fire safety and compliance comes up repeatedly.

Organisations want to ensure they are meeting their legal responsibilities while also finding practical, cost-effective ways to manage their buildings’ safety.

Phil works closely with clients to guide them through the options available, such as fire alarm systems, fire extinguishers and fire risk assessments.

“It’s not just about compliance,” he explains. “It is about helping businesses to understand the practical steps they can take to improve safety, at the same time as identifying efficiencies that reduce long-term costs.”

By taking a consultative approach, Phil helps clients see Lightning Safety Systems not simply as a supplier, but as a partner supporting their wider operational goals.

When asked to describe his sales approach in three words, Phil has complete clarity:

With more than two decades of experience, he has learned that successful business relationships start with person-to-person genuine conversations.

“For me, selling has never been only about business transactions,” he says. “First and foremost, it’s about understanding the person across the table and building trust.”

Many of Phil’s client relationships have developed over years of working together, and of course some have grown into genuine friendships, which is a reflection of his belief that reliability and transparency are as much the foundations of good business as they are of good friendships.

As an Account Manager, he takes responsibility for exploring every service or solution that could benefit his clients.

“I do not believe in leaving options unexplored. My focus is always on identifying opportunities that add value, improve safety and support the client’s business.”

Where technology is opening new opportunities

The safety and security sector continues to evolve rapidly, and Phil sees several key areas of growth for Lightning Safety Systems.

Enhanced CCTV systems are in increasing demand as organisations look for smarter ways to protect their premises, people and assets.

At the same time, wireless fire alarm systems are becoming an increasingly attractive option for many businesses. These systems offer greater installation flexibility, reduced disruption and cost-effective compliance, and are particularly valuable in buildings where traditional cabling would be difficult or intrusive. “We’re already seeing strong interest in these technologies,” Phil says. “They offer businesses a way to future-proof their safety systems while maintaining efficiency and flexibility.”

Making clients feel comfortable from the first meeting

Phil’s approach to relationship-building begins the moment he meets a new client.

Standing at 6ft 8in, he is aware that his height can sometimes make him appear a little intimidating at first glance. For that reason, he focuses on being approachable, friendly and professional from the very beginning.

“I want clients to feel at ease straight away and know that nothing is ever too much trouble. My role is simply to help and support, whether that’s today or sometime in the future.”

That mindset often sets the tone for long-lasting partnerships built on mutual trust.

Looking ahead

Six months into his role, Phil hopes colleagues across Lightning Safety Systems will see the impact he has helped create.

Throughout his career, he has consistently contributed to growing both new and existing client portfolios by investing time in understanding each organisation’s goals and challenges.

“Many clients find that working together creates real value,” he says. “That might be through improved systems, cost efficiencies, or helping them plan for future expansion.”

Ultimately, Phil’s ambition is to build partnerships where both businesses grow stronger together.

Lightning's Managing Director Dave Green is pictured greeting Brett Boyd, Regional Sales Manager of leading wireless fire alarm manufactuer Hyfire, and Brett is rather more eye-openingly dressed than usual.

His unconventional, albeit seasonal outfit is the result of an internal competition within Hyfire for their sales team, to see who could wear the most original Christmas outfit as they visited their partners. Lightning is a Premier Parter and Brett presented Dave with an award, as well as a few seasonal goodies.

We think Brett takes the biscuit - or rather, the mince pie, don't you?

Top Ten Tips to reduce fire hazards at home and work

Fire safety starts with prevention — and whether you’re at home or in the workplace, a few simple steps can make all the difference in reducing risks and protecting lives.

1. Maintain alarms regularly

Smoke and heat alarms are your first line of defence. Test them weekly, change batteries when needed, and ensure they’re fitted in kitchens, hallways, and near sleeping areas. In workplaces, link alarms to central systems for full coverage.

2. Keep exits clear

Blocked exits can turn a minor incident into a disaster. Never store boxes, furniture, or equipment in front of fire doors or escape routes. At home, keep hallways free of clutter to allow a safe exit.

3. Don’t overload plug sockets

Electrical overloads are a major fire hazard. Use extension leads sparingly, never “daisy chain” adapters, and unplug chargers when not in use. In offices, ensure power is distributed properly across circuits.

4. Store flammable items safely

Paints, cleaning products, and fuels should be kept in ventilated areas away from heat sources. At work, follow COSHH guidelines and use appropriate storage cabinets.

5. Turn off appliances when not in use

Switch off cooking appliances, heaters, and office equipment before leaving the room or closing up for the day. A simple habit that significantly reduces risk.

6. Schedule regular fire risk assessments

At work, a legal requirement — but at home, just as important. Review escape plans, check extinguishers, and look out for hazards like damaged wiring or candles near curtains.

Changes to the way Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue respond to Automatic Fire Alarms

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) is changing the way it responds to Automatic Fire Alarms in certain types of buildings as of 01 August 2025.

Following a public consultation , HIWFRS will no longer automatically send crews when there is an automatic fire alarm notification in buildings with no sleeping risk, during the hours of 08:00 and 18:00hrs, unless there are confirmed signs of fire.

This policy applies to commercial, non-residential buildings such as shops, offices, leisure centres, libraries and warehouses. The Service will continue to attend automatic fire alarm notifications at buildings where there is a sleeping risk, such as hotels, hospitals, care homes, houses, and flats. There are also exceptions for heritage buildings, educational institutions during holidays, and specific alarm specifications.

In all cases, an emergency response will continue to be sent to 999 calls and confirmed fires.    For the full article please read here:

48 organisations awarded Silver for support to the Armed Forces community in the South East

48 organisations have been awarded the Ministry of Defences’ Employer Recognition Scheme Silver award in the South East region, recognising the support provided to Reservists, Veterans, Cadet Force Adult Volunteers, spouses/partners and the wider Armed Forces community. This year’s awardees brings the total number of Silver holders in the SE to 139. Colonel (Retired) Patrick Crowley, MBE DL, Chief Executive, South East Reserve Forces’ & Cadets’ Association (SERFCA) on behalf of Defence Relationship Management, MOD, and SERFCA said:

“I am delighted that 48 private and public sector organisations have been awarded the Silver Award this year by the MOD. In addition, 5 existing Silver Award holders have been revalidated for another 5 years. These numbers are higher than usual, despite the background environment of the pandemic, which is brilliant. It demonstrates the importance of the Defence-Employer relationship, which is of mutual benefit to both parties.”

To be considered for a Silver award, organisations must provide 5 extra days leave for Reservists and have in place supportive HR policies for employees who are Veterans, Reservists, and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers, as well as spouses and partners of those serving in the Armed Forces. Organisations should also advocate the benefits of supporting those within the Armed Forces community by encouraging others to sign the Armed Forces Covenant and engage in the Employer Recognition Scheme.

This year, organisations include NHS trusts, educational institutions, charities, police services, fire & rescue services, councils and a whole range of private businesses. 77 per cent are private companies, demonstrating the wide range of organisations offering support to the military community regardless of size, sector or location.

Grenfell fallout: The 10 questions that need answers

The Grenfell fire has vindicated many in the fire industry’s worst fears about several longstanding problems.

Not only that, a drip-drip of revelations is revealing a litany of other shortcomings – of the council, firefighting equipment and the government’s response, among others – that have shocked even fire industry insiders.

Here are 10 of the most pressing questions that need satisfactory answers if councils, the government, the construction industry and the fire sector can work together to prevent similar tragedies happening again.

1. Why are cladding tests limited to one type of cladding when several other varieties could be combustible too?

More than 200 cladding samples taken from high-rise tower blocks in 54 local authorities since the Grenfell tragedy have failed tests, according to the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG).

However, testing has been limited to aluminium composite material panels – those implicated in the Grenfell fire – even though other varieties of cladding may be similarly combustible. Niall Rowan, COO of the Association for Specialist Fire Protection, told The Independent that non-aluminium cladding systems, such as CEP and Carea, would also fail government tests. “I would put money on it,” he said. “They are different materials to the Reynobond but they would all have a similar reaction to fire under the fire test.”

“The Government’s gone chasing after cladding and missing the bigger picture – they are saying: ‘We want limited combustibility,’ but the construction industry has been reading building regulations as Euroclass B for years.” Niall Rowan, COO, ASFP

Rowan also pointed out that the government’s testing scheme has used a more rigourous combustibility grade – ‘A2’ or ‘limited combustibility’ – than stipulated in Approved Document B, which only prescribes class 0 (Euroclass B), a lower threshold.

“This is why we have been pushing for a review of the building regulations for years and why many in the fire sector are very angry because this should not have happened.”

Replacement Fire Panels System Contract

East Sussex Educational Provider Replaces Entire Fire Panel System

The contract – replacement of aging fire panels

Electrical contractors Simpson Electrical were looking for a fire alarm company to partner with as they had won a prestigious yet challenging contract to replace the existing panels at a large educational provider in East Sussex.

The Solution – intelligent design and installation of new fire panel system

The solution included a design compliant with BS and it had to meet the technical and commercial needs of the client. Importantly, it had to be designed quickly, imaginatively and it had to be installed in a limited timescale at a time of year when resource traditionally is at its lowest.

The multi-site establishment has 27 buildings, of which 17 are on the main site networked together using fibre optic cable and the panels on the main site were in excess of 10 years old and no longer available.

We designed a replacement system using Advanced Electronic fire panels linked via the use of fibre optic cables. We ensured that the panels were programmed with phased evacuation so as not to disturb the complete site should an incident be detected.

Outcome – successful installation

All of the panels were successfully installed over the Christmas holidays with the existing field devices being connected back onto the new panels and all within the agreed time constraints.

The future – an effective maintenance solution

The client’s fire system is now on Lightning Safety Systems Customer Management Portal (CMP). Via the secure login, the client can view all the individual assets that make up their fire system. They can see the maintenance schedule, progress of projects in real-time, request jobs, and access all of their asset management history and advanced reports. Compliance and service transparency in one place.

Radian Group Limited, New Contract for Lightning Safety Systems

We are very pleased to announce a 5 year contract with the Radian Group, covering 380 of their sites from Bournemouth, Dorset to High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.

The contract covers fire alarms, emergency lighting, fire extinguishers, AOV sprinklers and dry risers.

A real benefit to the client is using our simPRO customer management portal, where they can see at a glance their complete asset register, maintenance programmes and all aspects concerning the contract, meeting all their fire regulation compliance standards.

Housing Association Contract

To conclude what has been a fabulous week for Lightning Safety, we have signed a 2-year contract with a leading southern based Housing Association to design, supply, install and commission fire detection systems in their properties which range from converted houses all the way through to tower blocks. This contract is worth up to £1,100,000 and we now look forward to beginning to work with the Association to help protect their residents and their properties.
